What is a rite of passage?

For thousands of years, communities marked the move from childhood towards adulthood with a rite of passage. A time to step away from the tribe, learn new skills, be tested and come home changed. Modern life has quietly lost these moments, just as our children need them most.

This is a modern rite of passage program that brings that tradition back, safely with experts and with purpose.

What it does for your child
Builds real confidence through challenge they can see and feel.
Surrounds them with trusted adults and new friends beyond home and school, who see them and recognise their strengths.
Helps them know their values and who they want to become.
Invites family to recognise your child as they come home, with a closing ceremony you are part of.

The NORTHSTAR Way™

Every day points somewhere. This is our purposefully designed methodology. Our approach brings together four pillars: Direction, Connection Adventure and Character.
‍

Each day combines outdoor experiences with guided reflection, helping expeditioners connect what they do with what they learn about themselves. Select a compass point to explore the day.

Day 2 · North

Finding your bearings, on land, on water and inside. The evening circle turns to the values that are truly their own.

Your expedition base

Home base in the Snowy Mountains.

Every day of the expedition starts and ends at a purpose built alpine lodge village above Lake Jindabyne. It has hosted school groups all year round for more than 30 years, so the beds, the meals and the safety systems are proven long before your expeditioner arrives.

Warm lodges, proper meals and a team who know your child by name. You can send them off knowing exactly where they will be, and who is looking after them.

40 years experience

Purpose built, and running year round school group programs. A purpose built facility catering to over 120 Australian Schools.

Big expedition, small crews

A large co-ed expedition brings the energy, the friendships and the sense of occasion. Each day is lived in a small crew with its own guide, so every child is known.

Single sex lodges

Sleeping is always separate for girls and boys.

Every meal sorted

All meals are provided in the dining hall, with dietary needs and allergies planned for from your forms before departure.

Supervised day and night

1 guide to every 10 expeditioners by day, and NORTHSTAR Facilitators sleeping in every lodge at night.

Health and wellbeing first

Medical details, medication and allergy plans are with the team caring for your child before day one.
